THE GROUPS
Super Social Skills is an ongoing social skills group for children who have been identified as in need of assistance with social competency. All groups are run by Dr. Lori A. Harral. A licensed Clinical Psychologist with more than fifteen years experience working with children and families.
Many children could use practice in the area of social skills. Mastering social skills is particularly a challenge for children with attentional disorders (ADD & ADHD), the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and/or the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). These children often have noteble difficulties in making and keeping friends or in working effectively with others. To them, social rules of behavior and interaction are often confusing and frequently overwhelming. In general, they lack knowledge about appropriate social behavior and have little understanding of the unwritten rules of social conduct. This difficulty, often results in social isolation, ostracism, failure to maintain successful academic posture, misunderstanding, depression and anxiety.
Super Social Skills is a group approach to teaching social competence to children with ADD, ASD and PDD. It is a social skills curriculum for elementary aged children who have functional language. The groups are quite beneficial for children who are struggling with ADD, as they too, have frequently been inattentive to the social skills required to maintain positive relationships and often fall into the category of children who become socially ostracized. Super Social Skills groups target children with ADD and “higher functioning” ASD. This typically includes the diagnoses of autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome (AS) and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD nos).
The premise behind Super Social Skills is that children who have social deficits must be taught specific, desirable actions for social inclusion in a setting where they cannot fail. It teaches these actions with equal peer partners who share similar deficits. Everyone is set up to succeed, one step at a time. In the supportive and non-threatening environment provided by Super Social Skills, children find that they are not alone. With repetition and persistence, most experience success and eventually feel pride in their progress.
Super Social Skills is structured to give everyone the opportunity to practice new social behavior through modeling, rehearsal and practice activities. Specifically, the groups target deficits in reciprocity, communication and understanding. Children are taught the skills needed to develop relationships while also obtaining skills required to help them be successful in school. Parents are provided with weekly outlines of the skills concentrated on, and encouraged to assist their children in focusing on each new skill.
